    Non Destructive Test (NDT)

    April 2014 edition

In 1854, in Hartford, the state capital of Connecticut, one of the states in USA, a boiler at the Fales and Gray Car works exploded, killing 21 people and seriously injured 50.Within a decade, the State of Connecticut passed a law requiring annual inspection (Visual Inspection) of boilers to locate flaws such as cracks, undercut seams and lap etc.
Welcome to April edition on Quality Digest.

    Non Destructive Test (NDT)
This is a wide group of analysis techniques used in science and industry to evaluate the properties of a material, component or system without causing damage.
The following are some of the key methods of NDT.
    • - Magnetic Particle Testing or MPT. This is used for surface and near surface discontinuities. The principal industrial uses of magnetic particle testing are final inspection, receiving inspection, in process inspection and quality control, maintenance  and overhaul in the transportation and oil and gas industries
    • - Liquid or Dye Penetrant Testing is used for method for finding discontinuities that are open to the surface of solid and essentially non-porous material through capillary action. The major limitation of liquid penetrant testing is that, it can detect only imperfections that are open to the surface.
    • - Radiographic Testing is a non-destructive testing of components and assemblies that is based on differential absorption of penetrating radiation- either electromagnetic radiation of very short wave-lengths or particulate radiation by the part.
    • - Ultrasonic Testing is a non-destructive testing (NDT) method in which beams of high frequency sound waves that are introduced into the material being tested are used to detect surface and sub-surface flaws. Ultrasonic testing or inspection (UT) is used for quality control and materials testing in all major industries.
    • - Visual Testing. This is done using your eyes and some simple gadgets. It is a fact that all defects found by other NDT methods ultimately must be substantiated by visual inspection.
